Out of the Ordinary

We all know that it’s pretty out of the ordinary that the Alaska Great Lakes Project group travels to Alaska for three weeks every year. It’s even more unusual to find an individual that goes on a similar trip just because; especially when, just like the AGLP participants, that person is from Michigan. Roxie Stewart is that person.

58 year-old Roxie, who is now retired, was a technology professor at West Shore, a community college in Branch, Michigan. “I came to Alaska seeking adventure; this is my biggest adventure so far.” Said Roxie, gesturing to the mountaintop on which she was standing.  “It was a hard climb,” she said with a sigh, “ but I really loved making it to the top. When I wanted to give up I just told myself to keep going because I wanted it more than anything to make it.”

Roxie left Branch for Alaska on June 6th and has been visiting areas all over the state. The area that she is currently visiting is Denali national park and she plans to travel to Seward later in the week. “I drove all the way so the journey and arriving was a big part of the adventure.”

Although she traveled in search of adventure instead of to observe the impact of an oil spill, Ms. Roxie Stewart went on an unusual journey from Michigan to Alaska. She is traveling all over Alaska for thrills and excitement and happened to run into the AGLP group at the top of Mt. Healy after concurring her biggest adventure yet. Alaska’s untamed wilderness has led many to embark on unusual journeys and appeals to all kinds of people; the adventurous, like Roxie; and those who want to study is, like the Alaska Great Lakes Project.
